Official information
What the Digital Nomad Visa is
This is the common name for the D8 visa for people who work remotely, either as employees or as independent workers. There are two versions: a residence visa, and a temporary stay visa for less than a year. Applicants must be citizens of countries outside the EU, the EEA and Switzerland.
Main requirements
- Income. The consular site says your average monthly income over the last 3 months must be at least four times the guaranteed minimum monthly wage. It gives no euro figure, so ask the consulate for the current amount.
- Tax residence. You need a document that shows where you are resident for tax.
- Work link. Employees show an employment link. Independent workers show the services they provide.
- The general visa conditions also apply, such as means of subsistence, travel insurance and a criminal record certificate.
Documents the consulate lists
- The general documents (form, photos, passport, proof of status, travel insurance, criminal record certificate).
- Employees: an employment contract, or a declaration from the employer confirming the work link.
- Independent workers: a company contract, a service contract, or a document showing services provided to one or more clients.
- Proof of your average monthly income for the last 3 months, and proof of tax residence.
- For the temporary stay version, a promise of a work contract or a written proposal for a service contract is also listed.
These are base documents. The consulate may ask for more.
How it works
- Choose the residence visa or the temporary stay visa and find your consular post.
- Submit the form and documents. The decision time in the law is 60 days for a residence visa and 30 days for a temporary stay visa.
- With the residence visa, apply to AIMA for the residence permit after you arrive. AIMA asks for your passport, the visa, an honour declaration about the work relationship and a declaration of your address.
- The residence permit is valid for 2 years and can be renewed in 3-year periods.
Fee
The consular site lists 110 euros for processing a national visa application, with exemptions for some groups. Confirm the fee with the consulate.

Before you contact a lawyer
- Check that the lawyer is registered with the Portuguese Bar Association (Ordem dos Advogados). Its website has a public search.
- Ask what the first consultation costs and how fees for your case would be set. Ask for this in writing.
- Say which language you want to use, for talking and for documents.
- Ask exactly what the lawyer will do for you, and who in the firm will handle your case.
- Be careful with anyone who promises a result. Decisions on applications are made by the authorities, not by the lawyer.
- Check the details on this site with the firm. They come from public sources and can be out of date.
