About these listings

78 listings mention Family Reunification in their public information. A listing shows what the lawyer or firm says about its own work. It is not a check of their experience or results.

Official information

What family reunification is

A foreign resident of Portugal can ask to bring certain family members who are outside Portugal to live with them. This page does not apply to family members of citizens of the EU, the EEA or Switzerland.

Who can be reunited

The consular website lists these relatives of the resident:

  • The spouse.
  • Minor or incapacitated children of the couple or of one spouse.
  • Adopted minors, under conditions the page sets out.
  • Unmarried adult children who depend on the resident and study in Portugal, under conditions the page sets out.
  • Parents or other ascendants in the first degree, if they depend on the resident or spouse.
  • Minor siblings under the resident's guardianship, under conditions the page sets out.
  • A partner in a de facto union that is duly proven.

Main conditions

The law asks, in general, for a valid residence permit, suitable housing and enough income to support the family without social support. The law was amended in October 2025 and again in 2026, and some conditions, such as a waiting period for the resident, changed or have exceptions. The official consular and AIMA pages we read do not explain these changes, so ask AIMA what applies to your case.

How it works

  1. The resident asks AIMA (the immigration agency) to approve the reunification, by appointment at an AIMA store, with the permit, proof of family ties, proof of address and of means of subsistence, and criminal records.
  2. After AIMA sends a favourable decision, the relatives apply for a residence visa at a Portuguese consulate.
  3. After arriving with the visa, the relative applies to AIMA for the residence permit.

Fee

Only a spouse or ascendants must pay the visa processing fee (110 euros on the consular site). Visas for descendants of permit holders under family reunification are exempt. The AIMA fee for the request was not published on the pages we read.

Before you contact a lawyer

  1. Check that the lawyer is registered with the Portuguese Bar Association (Ordem dos Advogados). Its website has a public search.
  2. Ask what the first consultation costs and how fees for your case would be set. Ask for this in writing.
  3. Say which language you want to use, for talking and for documents.
  4. Ask exactly what the lawyer will do for you, and who in the firm will handle your case.
  5. Be careful with anyone who promises a result. Decisions on applications are made by the authorities, not by the lawyer.
  6. Check the details on this site with the firm. They come from public sources and can be out of date.
