About these listings
58 listings mention Work Visa in their public information. A listing shows what the lawyer or firm says about its own work. It is not a check of their experience or results.
Official information
Main routes
The official pages describe several ways for citizens of countries outside the EU to live and work in Portugal. AIMA's working page lists the permits by article of the foreigners law. The main ones are:
- Employed work. A residence visa for work, then a residence permit from AIMA. It needs an employment contract (or promise of one) and registration with social security.
- Independent work. For liberal professions, a company contract or a proposal for a service contract. For entrepreneurs, proof of an investment operation or of available funds.
- Highly qualified work and the EU Blue Card. For contracts of at least six months with a pay level that the law states as a multiple of the national average wage. We do not show euro figures, because the official pages read do not state them.
- Seasonal work. A temporary stay visa for the length of the contract (a maximum of nine months in a 12-month period, according to the law).
Important changes
- The route for permits for employed work without a visa (the "manifestation of interest") ended on 4 June 2024. Procedures started before that date continue.
- The job-seeker visa is described in the law, but the consular website says it is "not yet available" at Portuguese consulates and waits for regulation.
How it works
- Apply for the residence visa at the Portuguese consulate for your region. The consular site states 60 days for the decision.
- The residence visa is valid for two entries and four months.
- After arriving, apply to AIMA for the work residence permit by appointment. AIMA asks for your passport, the visa, an honour declaration from the employer about the work link, a declaration of your address, and tax and social security registration.
- The work residence permit is valid for 2 years and can be renewed in 3-year periods.
Fee
The consular site lists 110 euros for processing a national visa application, with some exemptions. We have not listed the AIMA permit fees because they could not be confirmed.

Before you contact a lawyer
- Check that the lawyer is registered with the Portuguese Bar Association (Ordem dos Advogados). Its website has a public search.
- Ask what the first consultation costs and how fees for your case would be set. Ask for this in writing.
- Say which language you want to use, for talking and for documents.
- Ask exactly what the lawyer will do for you, and who in the firm will handle your case.
- Be careful with anyone who promises a result. Decisions on applications are made by the authorities, not by the lawyer.
- Check the details on this site with the firm. They come from public sources and can be out of date.
